» canuckfilm - New Canadian Film Raises Hot Topics

Here's a film that asks some tough questions. It's called 'Civic Duty'. It stars Peter Krause - the actor from Six Feet Under.

Over exposure from the media's post 9/11 terrorist threats leads Peter Krause's character to become obsessed when an unattached Islamic graduate student moves in next door. Convinced his new neighbour poses a threat, he takes matters into his own hands, and things spiral out of control.

This psychological thriller puts a face on the fear-mongering and distrust that fuels the 'war on terror'. Fear is definitely a potent motivator to instill patriotism. But the probability of dying in a terrorist attack is much less than dying of a heart attack.

Peter Krause's character takes his vigilante patriotism too far, with a cost to his marriage and his sanity.

How responsible is the media for post 9/11 fear mongering and patriotism? Has it fueled intolerance instead of safety? What do you think?

Have a look at this film that asks these tough questions - it opens on Friday, May 4th.

Well, fear-mongering is definitely effective to induce group polarization. The 'buzz' around terrorists threats certainly help when it comes to funding a war.
