The power of the media

Advertising, images and our attention

I don't know how we manage to live normal lives with all the daily information we gather. And with the constant adverts around us, it's a wonder we can do anything at all

The world we live in is becoming stuffed full of adverts and signs that invade our lives. On the television, in the newspapers and magazines, on clothes and advertising boards. We just can’t seem to get away from it. And it all means that we become more desensitised to it in some ways. But maybe desensitisation isn’t always a bad thing. I know that I wouldn’t mind being able to ignore certain images, tunes and people who ignore me as I try to watch my favourite television programmes and the flashing luminous signs of shops by the road distract me while I’m driving which only help to take my mind off the jingle of the adverts on the radio.

Our brains soak these things up which is why advertisers spend millions each year trying to think of ways to capture our imagination. But what about the subliminal messages we get about junk food being good for us, money being the route to happiness and the opposite sex being objects for our lust?

It’s these images which begin to take hold of us. And it’s how the different religions are shown which is also affecting the way we think. What do you think of religion and how has it been shaped by the media? More to the point, are your views the true ones?
