I sometimes wonder what it was like for my grandparents to live through the Second World War. All the bombing, the death, the uncertainty of everything happening around must’ve been unbearable at times. Both of my grandfathers were in the RAF and my Grandad was involved in the D-Day landings towards the end of the war, but to actually think that they were real events and not some film or story is difficult for me to get straight in my head.
But for some people the idea that this sort of thing happens on a daily basis, where families are pushed out of their houses and away from their lives and friends to either start a new life somewhere else or spend time fleeing from the authorities.
What is it like for these people? What would be going through your head? I know for me it’s a very difficult concept to understand as I sit in my comfortable house in front of my computer, with food on the table and bills being paid. My nice cosy lifestyle, at least in contrast to that of others in the world, is something which makes it alien for me to grasp the enormity of the persecution of the Jews.
But persecution of groups for their religious beliefs happens all the time across the world. From Eritrea to Israel those of us in a more privileged position need to count ourselves lucky and make a stand for a more equal world.
