A Romantic at Heart

Why I Think Marriage is so Important

What's your idea of an ideal partner? Maybe you want someone to look after you, love you, fix the car or empty the bins. So is marriage still that special? I think it is.

I like to do things to celebrate anniversaries and other special occasions and my Mum’s often said to me that I’m a romantic. I like buying my wife flowers and I like going out for a nice meal now and then. And with our wedding anniversary coming around again in about six weeks, I’m thinking what I can buy her.

For some reason, I’ve always felt that marriage is something a bit more special than just living together, even if people have been together for years. Even before I became a Christian I felt that marriage is more special than co-habitation. Even though my Mum’s marriage didn’t work out, I felt that marriage should be something special. And despite the marriage rate falling over the last few decades and the divorce rate rising, marriage is something to be treasured. And I always want to tell people whose parents are still together that they’re lucky and should keep telling themselves that.

Politicians are always taking a break from their affairs to tell us that marriage is special and that their party will promote the importance of the family. But maybe society’s reached the stage where marriage isn’t needed any more and it’s too late to go back. So why do religions keep telling us that marriage is right? Because God says it is. And if God says something, it’s true. Regardless of the society and the politicians. Never mind what someone stands up and says. It’s not a matter of whether God agrees with us; it’s whether we agree with God. And if the politicians keep saying something, they need to make sure it’s the right thing, they live by what they say and it’s not just a political whim to gain votes.

Rant over. Let the romance begin.
