We can all offer advice to others but is that advice really good stuff? It's easy to offer the same old advice, but a new approach might just give a fresh angle.
One of the buzz terms these days is to “think outside the box” and as an absolute hater of anything like that I’m really kicking myself for using it. But finding a new approach to an old problem sometimes makes it easier. If we look at something in a different way we sometimes see things we haven’t seen before and we can get more from a situation than we thought we’d be able to get.
But one of my old university lecturers used to use a phrase which still sticks in my head and I frequently think of it when I’d faced with change: if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If something doesn’t need to be fixed, then don’t – it may be the bit of tinkering we did to try to solve a minor problem has put the whole thing out of balance so it doesn’t work at all any more.
And so it is with religion and spirituality. Maybe a new, different approach will bring something extra to the search for life and happiness; but maybe it will also bring ridicule and division. Which brings us neatly to Scientology. What are we to make of it? I don’t know is the honest answer. Something which seems so promising seems to be beefing itself up to be something more than it really is. Is it a religion or just a way of thinking? Is it to do with spirituality or just psychotherapy? And how did Tom Cruise put his foot in it and increase the popularity of Scientology at the same time? Is it a sinister cult or does it have something genuinely good to offer everyone?
